Before
designing for the land, we had to get to know the land.
Half-hour solo walks allowed us to get an initial feel
for the property; we were encouraged to use all of our
senses in our exploration. Next, as a group, we brainstormed
all of the factors, both physical and socio-political,
which must be considered when evaluating a site. Later
on in day, the whole group went for a more official
“site assessment” walk. |

Chas explained his vision and ideas for different parts

Jillian led us in the investigation of soil types, natural
landscape features and their implications, among other
things.

We also considered the possible uses of the pre-existing
buildings and fences, for example catching water off
of the roof of the old house pictured below on the right.

Although we were eventually chased inside by the rain,
following the site assessment we felt ready to begin
the design process.
